Hon. Mrs. Maria Fernanda Lay, President of Timorese Parliament, presided over the opening ceremony. The Ambassador of Thailand, in his opening remarks, congratulated Timor-Leste on its successful accession to ASEAN, which will officially take place during the 47th ASEAN Summit in October 2025. He emphasized the close ties between Thailand and Timor-Leste, dating back to Thailand’s participation in the peacekeeping mission in 1999 and the establishment of the diplomatic relations in 2002, as well as Thailand’s continued support for Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN.

After the presentation, Thai and Timorese MPs discussed their parliamentary work post-ASEAN accession, including AIPA framework, compliance with ASEAN rules and regulations, and ways to spread understanding of ASEAN among the public.
